エアボード プロジェクトは、 Back to the Futureの ホバーボードを、 マジで実現してみよう、 というプロジェクトです。 でも 反重力装置 はまだないので、 超小型のジェットエンジンを利用しています。地上から数センチホバーリングしながら滑走し、操作は体重移動でのみ行います。Air Boardは、３つの機体が存在します。

●一号機 AirBoard　α　

制作開始は１９９７年末。 機体のみでの安定した垂直浮上を おこなうことが このバージョンの目的で、 何回かの点火実験を行いましたが、 設計上の問題が多く、 結局本体のみの浮上、 試乗は行わなかった。 ２発のジェットエンジンは、 それぞれβ、γに移植された後、 本体は廃棄されました。

● 二号機 AirBoard　β

1999年制作。 何回かの点火実験を行い、 失敗も多かったが数多くのマイナーチェンジの末、 最終的には作家を乗せて浮上に成功。 （動画にそのシーンがあります。ドイツ：ボンでの展覧会）

エアボードβは あえてホバークラフト的な構造から逸脱しているため 浮力がやや弱く、観客を乗せるためには 安全上の問題が多かったため、 次のγバージョンでは、 カヌー ＋ ホバークラフトのような 構造に設計変更されました。 ただ、デザイン上では 八谷が思い描いていたエアボード本来の スタイルに最も近いです。（作家蔵）

●三号機　AirBoard　γ

最終版のγは 実際に観客を乗せることを 目的としており、 こちらは東京都現代美術館で 公開制作され 2001年に3月末に完成しました。 

今までに 熊本市現代美術館、 広島市現代美術館で 実際に観客を乗せており、 体験会などに使われるのは 安全性を重視した このバージョンです。（東京都現代美術館所蔵）

なお、 β、 γ のカスタムペイントは 倉科昌高氏 によるものです。

a board ride on the air

Air Board is a sculptured board with jet engine and made for the purpose of hovering in the air.

It is loaded with small turbojet engine and allows one person to stand on and hovers a few centimeters high above the ground and glides in the air. The board can be controlled by the boarder's weight movement.

Air Board has three steps to be completed and each step is as follows:

--Air Board (alpha) --test model--

A work for study. No person has been carried. The final purpose of this version is to perform two jet engine tests and achieve a stable vertical flotation. The work started in the end of 1997. The experiments were conducted three times .

--Air Board (beta) --experimental model--

Experimental work with a purpose of carrying Hachiya (weight 51 kg) on the board and hovering in a limited time. The work will start from the end of 1998 to 1999.

--Air Board (gamma)(figure)

Final work With a weight limit, the board will perform carrying a few persons selected among the audience.

The work will start from the 2000.
